Open collector explanation

Hi,

I am try to implement basic combinational circuits in Pspice, when I want to place an XOR gate, I have seen several types like 2 input with open collector ..etc. I am completely new to pspice, and just wanted to know about about xor open collector type, what does open collector generally mean? Can anybody help me with this?

An open collector is a common type of output found on many integrated circuits (IC), which behaves like a switch that is either connected to ground or disconnected.

This is entirely internal circuitry with the XOR.

Don't worry you can choose any standard XOR, that is available in spice and could make the simulation.

An open collector is a common type of output found on many integrated circuits (IC), which behaves like a switch that is either connected to ground or disconnected. Instead of outputting a signal of a specific voltage or current, the output signal is applied to the base of an internal NPN transistor whose collector is externalized (open) on a pin of the IC. The emitter of the transistor is connected internally to the ground pin. If the output device is a MOSFET the output is called open drain and it functions in a similar way. For example, the I²C bus is based on this concept.

An open-collector output is used to connect one side of the device being controlled to ground. The other side of the device will be connected to power.You connect the positive side of your device to the 5v connection and the negative side to a drive output.

If you look at the CRICKIT "drive" outputs you will see that this is exactly what they are.An open collector is a common type of output found on many integrated circuits which behaves like a switch that is either connected to ground or disconnected. Instead of outputting a signal of a specific voltage or current, the output signal is applied to the base of an internal NPN transistor whose collector is externalized on a pin of the IC.
